MECHANICAL TESTING

Mechanical destructive testing on Carbon steels and Stainless steels

1.Tensile 2. Bend 3. Charpy 4. Macro Examination 5. Vickers Hardness 6. Micro Examination 7. Fillet Fracture 8. Nick break 9. Ferrite Count

Tensile Testing

Tensile testing provides details on the tensile mechanical properties of a material. The can be graphically represented on a graph as a stress/ strain graph to show details such as the elastic limit, yield strength, modulus of elasticity and strain.

Purpose may include:

  • Selecting materials for an application
  • Predicting how a material will perform under different forces
  • Determining whether the requirements of a specification, contract or standard are met.
  • Demonstrating proof of concept for a new product
  • PQR and Welders qualification
  • Providing standard quality assurance data for engineering applications
  • Comparing the mechanical properties of different material

Bend Testing

A bend test is a method for measuring stiffness and yield properties of certain materials. Bend tests for ductility provide way to evaluate the quality of materials by their ability to resist cracking or other surface irregularities during one continuous bend.

Bend testing determines the materials:

  • Ductility
  • Bend strength
  • Fracture strength
  • Resistance to fracture

These characteristics can also be used to determine whether a material will fail under pressure and are important in any construction process involving ductile materials loaded with bending forces.

Charpy V-Notch Testing

Charpy tests show whether a metal can be classified as being either brittle or ductile. This is particularly useful for ferritic steels that show a ductile to brittle transition with decreasing temperature.

This is used to determine:

  • The resistance capacity of a metal against sudden impact load
  • The malleability a material
  • The ductility of a material
  • The strength of a material

Macro Examination

Macro examination is used to check the quality of welds. A cross section of welded material is polished and etched for examination.

This will determine if the weld has:

  • Porosity
  • Slag inclusion
  • Lack of weld penetration
  • Lack of side wall fusion
  • Poor weld profile.

This helps to examine materials for:

  1. Surface imperfections such as cracks, undercut, excessive throat, convexity, and weld toe angle.
  2. Internal imperfections such as cracks, porosity, metallic inclusions, lack of fusion, lack of penetration.
  3. Slag Joint geometry imperfections such as root gap, root face, angle of chamfer, and misalignment.

Vickers Hardness Testing

In the Vickers hardness testing, the test specimen is indented with a known test force (HV).

The size of indentation (the diagonals) left by the indenter is measured.

The larger the indent left by the indenter at a defined test force in the surface of a workpiece (specimen), the softer the tested material.

Micro Examination

Microscopic Examination is conducted to study the microstructural features of the material under magnification. The properties of a material determine how well it will perform under a given application.

These properties are dependent on the structure of the material.

Material can be examined for:

  • Grain size
  • Extent of Carburization and Decarburization
  • Intergranular Attack and Oxidation
  • Sensitization
  • Alpha Case/Surface Contamination
  • Percent Spheroidization
  • Inclusion Rating

Fillet Fracture

Fillet weld fracture test determines fillet weld soundness. This test is performed to reveal internal imperfections such as:

  • Slag inclusion
  • Lack of fusion.
  • Incomplete penetration
  • Porosity

Nick Break

Nick Break Test is used to determine the quality of a weld and involves breaking open the weld lengthwise.

The exposed weld interior is visually inspected for any internal imperfections such as:

  • Lack of sidewall fusion
  • Lack of inter-run fusion
  • Porosity

The test can be carried out for both Butt Welds and Fillet Welds A groove is machined along the weld centreline to provide a convenient fracture path before the specimen is split open using a hydraulic press or a hammer.

Ferrite Count

Ferrite examination by the point count method and feritscope are performed to determine the amount of ferrite present in the weld metal, HAZ and/or base metal. The point count test is performed on a polished and etched cross-section of the specimen per the point count method as defined in ASTM E562 or a company derived specification. The point count test is applied to welds that involve the duplex stainless steels.

Ferrite examination by feritscope is a nondestructive test performed with a contact probe that calculates ferrite using electro-magnetic response.
